Modern research has verified and  demonstrated acupuncture’s effects on many of the body’s systems.

The nervous system, endocrine, immune systems, cardiovascular system, and digestive system have all been shown to benefit from acupuncture.

Stimulation of muscle and motor points helps restore muscle firing and improve recovery times post injury.

By stimulating the body’s fascial planes and nerves, acupuncture helps to resolve pain, and improve sleep, digestive function, and your overall sense of well-being.

Many patients love coming every week! Others get treatment more or less often, depending on their goals and symptoms. Chronic problems tend to require more treatment while, acute conditions tend to resolve more quickly. Your acupuncturist will recommend a schedule that is right for you.

The goal is to correct imbalances and improve function so that your condition is completely resolved. The amount of time the effects of acupuncture last depend on your age, symptoms, and other treatments you are receiving. After the first few treatments we’ll have a better idea of what your healing process will look like.

In western medical theory, acupuncture appears to work by stimulating muscles, nerves and connective tissue.  It also stimulates the body to release natural biomolecules such as neurotransmitters, vasodilators, and hormones. The exact mechanisms which bring this about are still being studied and discovered, but the effects are measurable.

In Chinese medical theory, acupuncture works by balancing the body’s energy. If energy gets blocked, it shows up as an imbalance or illness. Basically, if you have a health condition, some part of your body’s system is out of whack. Chinese medical theory allows us to diagnose the imbalance and work to bring it back into balance.

No, the needles do not hurt. A skilled acupuncturist can adjust the treatment so that you feel almost nothing. While most people prefer to barely feel anything when needles are inserted others enjoy the deep sensation of having the needles slightly stimulated after insertion. Acupuncture needles are solid, flexible, and very, very thin

There are certain sensations associated with the therapeutic effects of acupuncture. These may include slight heaviness, pressure or traveling sensation along a area being treated. If any discomfort is experienced let us know right away and we can make it go away.

Acupuncture is often used in conjunction with western medical treatment. It works very well with physical therapy and we often coordinate care with your physical therapist for best results. Furthermore, acupuncture can be an important tool for recovering from surgeries, aiding in proper blood flow and reducing inflammation.

Acupuncture does not negatively interfere with other forms of medicine or medications. It is important to tell us what other treatments you’re receiving and what medications you’re taking.

Our Portland acupuncture team has strong relationships with family practice doctors, surgeons, DOs and physical therapists.

Your first visit is for a diagnostic consultation and treatment.

We will spend about 30 minutes going through health history and orthopedic assessment. After we gather all medically relevant information and answer any questions you have, we’ll begin treatment.

Please wear clothing that will allow us easy access to the areas being treated. Loose shorts and tops are something that are easy for us to work with. Any additional bedding that will make you more comfortable on the table is also encouraged.
