If you’ve recently been in a car accident or auto collision, you may be experiencing neck or back pain. Pain can begin immediately after the accident, or you may not start experiencing symptoms until hours, days or even several weeks later.

It is quite common for pain caused by an auto accident to be begin long after the accident. The adrenaline that enters the blood stream during and collision event masks pain and can persist in the body long after the impact.

How Does a Car Accident Cause Back Pain?

Back pain is one of the most common injuries after an accident. It can occur after head-on collisions, side impacts, fender benders and even abrupt stops. The mechanics of each injury varies. Here are some common reasons for back pain after an accident.

Soft tissue injuries: The soft tissue of your back neck and spine can all be injured during a car accident. These include your muscles, ligaments and nerves. The pain from soft tissue injuries can present as anything from deep aching to sharp stabbing pain depending on which tissues are inured

Bulging discs: The soft disc between your vertebrae act like shock absorbers between the bones of your spine. Abrupt impacts can shift these discs causing herniated or bulging discs. Once an accident has moved a disc it can push on a nerve root causing intense pain in the back.

Whiplash: Whiplash is a term used to describe back, shoulder and neck pain that occurs when your head is quickly snapped forward and backward. Whiplash often occurs when you are involved in a sudden impact or sudden stop.

Fractures and joint injuries: Any bone in the body can fracture with too much pressure. Hitting the body against the inside of the car or even bracing to hard in preparation for the impact can cause bone fractures. The joints in the vertebral column that prevent excessive twisting and bending can get slammed into one another during an accident. These facet joints can become swollen and inflamed causing throbbing and aching pain in the low back and legs.

Reduced inflammation in the body

Post-accident inflammation can cause pain in muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones and discs. The abrupt forces in an accident can cause tearing and bruising both of which will result in inflammation.

Acupuncture and chiropractic manipulations are both associated with the release of anti-inflammatory endorphins that will begin the healing process and reduce internal swelling.

Restored mobility:

Loss of mobility in the neck and back is associated with pain and inflammation. By reducing pain and inflammation the combined acupuncture and chiropractic will lead directly to improved mobility.

Prevention of Reinjury:

Healing quickly with less inflammation will lead to the development of less scar tissue. Scar tissue reduces mobility and makes tissues pull across one another in abnormal ways that lead to pain. The faster you heal the less time scar tissue has to form, reducing the likelihood of reinjury.
