Vinegars has been used for centuries and can be made from a variety of sources.  Molasses, fruits, grains, even coconuts and beets have been used to make vinegars.  Contemporary research has focused specifically on the benefits of apple cider vinegar.

Apple cider vinegar has enjoyed great popularity in recent years. There are many unsupported claims about it’s properties. The benefits listed here have all been subject to research and are substantiated.

  1. Treat Acid Reflux: Underproduction of acid in the stomach can contribute to acid reflux. Taking 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar everyday has been shown to reduce the symptoms of acid reflux for people who don’t produce enough stomach acid.

  2. Alleviate Digestive Pain: The antibacterial qualities of apple cider vinegar can calm symptoms like diarrhea. There is natural pectin from apples in the vinegar which can calm abdominal spasms. The vinegar can be used as a digestive aid as well. Mix 1-2 tablespoons of vinegar with water or juice and drink twice daily. As a digestive aid, drink before meals.

  3. Lose Weight: In fact, claims that apple cider vinegar can help you lose weight have gone back for centuries. Although only a handful of studies have been done, the evidence suggests that apple cider vinegar, when taken with meals, makes one feel fuller and eat less food. Again take 1-2 tablespoons mixed with water with meals.

  4. Treat Diabetes: Apple cider vinegar has been shown in studies to lower glucose levels by 4% to 6%. Participants in the study took 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar before bed and the glucose levels were tested in the mornings.

  2. Stop hiccups: Supposedly a teaspoon of undiluted apple cider vinegar taken during a bout of hiccups will relieve the hiccups.

  3. Smooth and condition hair: Apple cider vinegar can replace conditioners. Simply mix a bottle of 50% apple cider vinegar and 50% water together. After washing your hair apply this directly to you hair and let sit for a few minutes before rinsing.

  4. Soothe a sore throat: When the symptoms of a sore throat begin try one of these methods. Mix 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar with warm water and gargle every hour; or mix a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with hot water and a shot of honey and sip.

  5. Clear and brighten skin: Many people use apple cider vinegar for problems ranging from psoriasis and eczema to dry skin and blemishes. Try dabbing it to affected areas with a cotton ball 2 times per day for a week.
